Geomatics Engineering is a rapidly developing discipline that focuses on spatial information.Geomatics engineers manage local, regional, national and global spatial data infrastructures. Geomatics is a branch which involves almost all basic engineering principles so students from various backgrounds like electronics, computer science, civil engineering, information technology etc. are eligible for this PG course.

Here we are taught about the principles of remote sensing, principles of Photogrammetry, Geographical Information System, Digital Image Processing and some basic surveying.

The faculty of the department also conduct high quality of research and also render technical advice on live engineering problems to various agencies in the form of consultancy projects in which students can also participate so that students can receive the best from practical aspects. The research programmes of the department are funded by various agencies.

Department has following labs

    •  Survey Instruments Lab.

    •  GIS and Image Processing Labs

    •  Photogrammetry Lab

    •  Remote Sensing Lab

    •  Modern Surveying Instruments Lab

which provides latest equipments used in the field of Geomatics.

Various examples that can be put up to state the importance of Geomatics engineering are as follows:

  1. Planning for a city: For planning a new city we need to take care of various parameters like the nearby highways, airports, railway stations. So a Geomatics engineer can provide the optimum spatial location about the roads, power distribution units, health care facilities etc. Here, the factors which are concerned are the optimum connectivity of all facilities, nearby earth features which can affect the habitation and various other parameters related with spatial location.
  2. Estimation based on areas: Suppose we need to make a quick assessment for a particular density in an area. So, a Geomatics engineer can help by providing information about the land-use and land-cover various statistics. Various research are going on for the estimation of population using remote sensing which can provide results in a short span of time.

Overall Geomatics engineering is a future branch with lots of applications needed by human and still a branch of research which needs more concern.
