Department of Industrial & Management Engineering is the centre for managing Technology and Operations.
The department was established in 1974, since then it is serving diverse sector of industry and academics. Engineers with diverse background of engineering sit together and form a group of thinkers, who share wide areas of knowledge. The group shares interest in research related to modeling quantitative analysis and optimal resource allocation for decision problems in deterministic and stochastic contexts. The broad area of application is in manufacturing systems supply chains, logistics, finance, analytics, services infrastructure and other industrial system.
After being equipped with basics of Engineering at graduate level, here we develop understanding in applications. Operation Research, Probability and Statistics is nerve of the students of IME which can be easily developed during course work. We at IME learn how to model real world situation for the optimum use of resources available. The skills developed during M Tech in IME can be applied in every field of science and engineering, whether it is Computer Science or Mining Engineering because there is simply one rule that governs entire world and that is OPTIMIZATION.
We also get opportunity to work in industrial consultancy like research for optimum number of fire stations in Lucknow and other major cities of U.P, modeling supply chain of SEZs in India, ERP of Steel Industry etc. projects under the supervision of renowned faculties.
Various examples that can be put up to state the importance of Industrial engineering are as follows:

  1. Scheduling of Ships in Port: Singapore is busiest port in world because of its geographical importance. Due to congestion at the port, waiting time for loading and unloading of goods was in days. The problem was unsynchronized routing and scheduling of fleets and other goods carriers. After proper study of loads at the port, arrival of cargo, frequency of ships and availability of local transport system simulations was conducted to design scheduling algorithm for fleets, loading and unloading sequence of goods and waiting time is reduced to just hours.
  2. Suppose we are running a machine shop, we get orders from different vendors for different products. For the development of products we need machines and other materials. Each variety of products need machines and takes time which varies from products to product. When we get orders we always want to meet vendors demand in time. But how to utilize available machines and resources so that we incur least cost and satisfy our customer. We develop job scheduling algorithm like shortest job first, priority scheduling, and first come first serve based on requirement as operating system does in our computers.
  3. In the Courier Company we solve vehicle routing problems such as delivering courier to the concerned city within promised time incurring least cost. It means one person starts from a city and adopts a path in such a way that he visit each city once incurring least cost and returns back to the original starting point. This resembles Hamilton path in computer science.
People have confusions with real application and importance of IME. They mix it up with just MBA like course bubeyond and better than all this. It's neither MBA nor Core Engineering, its linker or assembler between the two. M Tech program in IME has full flavor of Engineering integrated with analytical understanding. Unless you are able to comprehend the things in right way you are not able to model it correctly.
After rigorous coursework of basic understanding, people find opportunity in plenty of areas ranging from Psychology to Applied Science and Engineering.
In Foreign universities this department has received wider exposure compared with the Indian context. This interdisciplinary program gives real satisfaction and provides a high growth career prospect for those who want techno managerial and analytical kind of career.
Placement record of the department has been good and it gives ample opportunity in analytics. Alumni’s from this department are working in big companies like Nomura, APL, JDA software, Citi group, HSBC, Genpact, MarketRx, HP analytics etc.
